Harvey Weinstein lawyer Jose Baez calls it quit

Harvey Weinstein lawyer Jose Baez calls it quit. Jose Baez alleges that the “behavior” of Mr Weinstein makes it “excessively difficult” to work with him. The Hollywood mogul has decided to resort to another lawyer to communicate with him and also, through another, has “threatened to take legal action” against his firm, in addition to not complying with agreements on fees.

Jose Baez, one of the two star lawyers hired by film producer Harvey Weinstein in January to represent him in the case against him for several sexual crimes, asked the judge to release him from exercising Mr Weinstein’s defense, according to the news reports published on Monday.

Baez explains in a letter that the producer only communicates with him through other lawyers and that he has threatened to denounce his firm, for which he requests that he approve his withdrawal from the case.

In mid-January, Weinstein broke with his lawyer, Ben Brafman, and hired Baez and Ronald Sullivan, described by some media as a dream team and known for working together in famous cases such as that of former American football player Aaron Hernandez for the double homicide of two men.

Sullivan, a lawyer and former dean of a Harvard University center, left his position as a lawyer for Harvey Weinsten a month ago amid criticisms received from students for accepting to represent Weinstein, whose behavior was reported in a report that sparked the movement against sexual harassment “Me Too” in 2017.

Apparently, the well-known lawyer already informed Weinstein in mid-May that it was “highly unlikely” that he could continue working with him and he told the judge that he also gave him “enough time” to find a replacement for Sullivan.

However, a producer’s representative told the media that due to Sullivan’s departure “because of pressure”, Weinstein lost an “essential component of the team and the legal strategy that has not yet been” replaced, and indicated that he will soon announce the members of his new defense team.
