On the occasion of its latest quarterly results published at the end of October, the Japanese video game juggernaut had raised its switch sales forecast for the current fiscal year 2017/18, to 14 million units, against 10 million previously.
Launched last March, the Switch is selling better in some countries than the Wii at the same time of its launch phase, said Kimishima in an interview with the Japanese newspaper Kyoto Shimbun.
“We are seeing a dynamic that exceeds our expectations, and people have embraced this unique gaming experience, where you can take the console outside or use it as a home console,” he said.
Released in 2006, the Wii, the first console with joysticks sensitive to the movements of the players, was the last major success of Nintendo, and sold in the end more than 100 million units.
Nintendo ceased production of the Wii in 2013 but its direct successor, the Wii U, did not enjoy the same success, resulting in a difficult financial pass for the console maker.
However, the 2016-2017 Pokemon Go mobile gaming phenomenon, developed under license by the American studio Niantic, finally convinced Nintendo to invest itself in the rapidly growing niche of games on the Internet and mobile phones to diversify its business.
At the end of October, the group strongly raised its earnings forecast for the current financial year, now counting on an annual net profit of 85 billion yen, a prospect almost doubled compared to its previous forecast, and a turnover of 960 billion yen, against a previous perspective of 750 billion yen.
